Mistral

Open-weight Apache-2 models plus a proprietary API, built as Europe's frontier-lab option.

Stackmaven verdict

Mistral is the most credible non-US frontier lab, and the only one shipping open weights at the flagship tier. Mistral Large 3 (675B total, 41B active, Apache-2) gives teams a model they can self-host, which matters for EU data residency and air-gapped work in a way the closed labs cannot match. The trade is real: on raw quality the frontier from Anthropic and OpenAI still leads, and the product surface shifts fast. For teams that need open weights, multilingual strength, or EU data handling, it is the solid pick.

Strengths
  • Open weights: Apache-2 models you can self-host, up to the flagship tier
  • Mistral Large 3 is the largest open-weight MoE from a major lab
  • Strong multilingual coverage, 40+ languages trained as a priority
  • Code models (Codestral, Devstral) and Magistral reasoning line
  • European lab, EU data residency and sovereign deployment story
Trade-offs
  • Raw quality trails the closed US frontier on hardest benchmarks
  • Product surface churns (Le Chat renamed to Vibe in May 2026)
  • Self-hosting the 675B flagship needs serious GPU capacity
  • Smaller ecosystem and tooling than OpenAI or Anthropic
  • Flagship API and managed platform are proprietary, not open

Mistral AI is a Paris-based lab founded in 2023 that ships both open-weight models under Apache 2.0 and a proprietary API platform. It is the most prominent European alternative to the US frontier labs, and the only major lab releasing open weights at the flagship tier rather than only at small or mid sizes.

Where it fits

Mistral is the answer when a team needs open weights, European data residency, or both. The Apache-2 license on most of the lineup means you can download the weights, run them on your own hardware, and ship in an air-gapped or sovereign environment without sending tokens to a US vendor. That positioning drives most enterprise adoption: regulated EU industries, public-sector work, and anyone with hard data-handling constraints.

Beyond self-hosting, the platform covers the usual surfaces. La Plateforme is the managed API, Le Chat (rebranded Vibe in May 2026) is the consumer and work assistant with web search and coding modes, Codestral and Devstral target code generation and agentic coding, and the Magistral line adds chain-of-thought reasoning. Pixtral handles vision. The pitch is one vendor across open and hosted, edge and cloud.

Pricing in practice

The open weights are free: download from Hugging Face and pay only for your own compute. The paid story is the API on La Plateforme, billed per token. Mistral Large 3 runs around $0.50 per million input tokens and $1.50 output, Mistral Medium 3.5 sits higher at roughly $1.50 in and $7.50 out, and Mistral Small 4 is cheap at about $0.10 in and $0.30 out. Magistral Medium reasoning is near $2 in and $5 out, Codestral around $0.30 in and $0.90 out. Le Chat / Vibe has a free tier with limits, a Pro plan near $14.99 per month, a Team plan around $24.99 per user, and custom Enterprise for private deployments. The economics favor Mistral hard when self-hosting offsets API spend.

How it compares

  • Claude, leads on hardest reasoning and coding benchmarks but is fully proprietary with no self-hosting. Pick Mistral when open weights or EU residency matter more than top-end quality.

  • GPT, broadest ecosystem and tooling, but closed and US-hosted. Mistral trades some capability for open weights and a European data story.

  • Llama, the other major open-weight family, but Meta caps releases below the true frontier tier. Mistral ships an open flagship (Large 3) that Llama does not match.

What changed recently

Mistral shipped its flagship Mistral 3 family on 2025-12-02, led by Mistral Large 3, a sparse mixture-of-experts model with 41B active of 675B total parameters, a 256K context window, and an Apache-2 license that makes it the largest openly released model from a major lab. Earlier in the cycle the lab introduced its first reasoning models, Magistral Small and Medium, on 2025-06-10, and closed a roughly 2 billion euro funding round in September 2025 at a valuation near 14 billion dollars. Through early 2026 the product surface consolidated: Mistral Medium 3.5 folded chat, reasoning, and code into one model in late April, and Le Chat was rebranded as Vibe in May 2026 with unified Work and Code modes and a VS Code extension.
